United International University (UIU) Vice Chancellor Prof Abul Kashem Mia and 11 other department heads have resigned in the wake of student protests.
They jointly resigned from their positions on Saturday night, according to a post on the university's verified Facebook page.
Earlier in the day, the students launched a demonstration at the UIU campus in the capital’s Bhatara Madani Avenue.
One of the protesters, Mohaiminul Islam, said in a video message: ‘'The students initiated the movement over a student’s failure to attend midterm, reduction of the exam time, and Tk 1500 per credit charge despite the announcement of a reduction in the improvement fee in response to students’ demands.
“The father of a CSE department student died 5 days before midterm. She couldn't attend the exam. When she wanted to take a make-up mid, the head of the department asked her to submit the certificate with the deputy commissioner’s attestation within three days. Otherwise, she is asked to pay the prescribed fee."
Mohaiminul continued, “Despite the announcement of reducing the improvement fee, Tk 1500 per credit is being taken as before. The exam duration of 1 hour 45 minutes has been reduced to 1 hour 30 minutes, but the extent of the question has not been shortened to compel students to take more improvement tests.
On Saturday morning, the students staged a sit-in on the campus demanding the resignation of CSE Department head Mohammad Nurul Huda, rescheduling the time to 1 hour 45 minutes and the improvement fee reduction per credit.
They later made a call demanding the vice chancellor’s resignation.
Meanwhile, a section of the protesters began a hunger strike demanding the VC's resignation. The students staged a sit-in outside the vice chancellor's office.
The post read the VC has decided to resign "protesting against the undue demands of protesting students".
Nurul Huda wrote in his resignation letter to the VC that he had asked the student to meet him after Apr 23 with the death certificate issued by the council. He is resigning to avoid an embarrassing situation as the movement has started over this.
On the other hand, 10 other departmental heads wrote in their letter that they were resigning "in protest against the unjust demands of the students”.
