Cement makers elect Alamgir Kabir as new president of their association

Md Alamgir Kabir, managing director of Crown Cement Concrete and Building Products, has been elected the new president of Bangladesh Cement Manufacturers Association, or BCMA, for the session 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Md Shahidullah, managing director of Metorcem Cement Ltd & chairman of Metrocem Group, and Zahir Uddin Ahmed, managing director of Confidence Cement, have also been elected the first and second vice-president of the BCMA respectively.

They were elected at the annual general meeting of the BCMA in Dhaka on Apr 30, the BCMA said in a statement on Saturday.

The other members of the new committee are Treasurer Faizur Rahman Bakul (Himalaya Cement) and Executive Members Abdul Khaleque Pervez (Diamond Cement), Md Manwar Hossain (Anwar Cement), Md Khurshed Alam (Fresh Cement), Ashraful Amin Badal (Heidelberg Cement), PN Iyer (Insee Cement) and Saif Rahman (Seven Rings Cement).

In an immediate reaction, Kabir said the new committee will work for the development of cement industry of Bangladesh.

The committee members will work “intensively” with the government and policymakers for the betterment of the industry, according to the statement.

They pledged to focus on maintaining the consumers’ rights. Kabir hoped that the cement sector will contribute the most to the government exchequer. It is mentionable that there are 76 cement companies, including five multinational companies, in Bangladesh.

Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and Meghna Group of Industries Chairman Mostafa Kamal also served as the president of the BCMA for previous terms.
