The founding chairperson of Dhaka University's linguistics department was 66.
He breathed his last in the capital's Apollo Hospitals early on Wednesday morning, his cousin Hasina Khatun told bdnews24.com.
His nephew Prof Akhter Hossain, chairperson of Dhaka University's public administration department, said Prof Humayun had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for a week for several health issues, including kidney complication.
His former colleagues and students joined his funeral prayers at the university in the afternoon.
They included Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, Pro VC Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman, and leaders of the teachers' association.
VC Siddique remembered in a condolence message Prof Humayun's contribution in establishing the linguistics department.
Another Namaz-e-Janaza was held at a mosque near his home at East Monipur in Mirpur.
His son Kaiser Rajib Sherpa said he would be buried at Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in Mirpur.
Born in Chittagong's Sandwip in 1951, Prof Humayun graduated from Dhaka University's Bangla department in 1972 and received his post-graduate degree two years later.
He started his career as a teacher by joining Chittagong University after getting PhD degree from India's Pune University in 1978. He also worked in Jahangirnagar University.
Rajib Humayun joined Dhaka University's Bangla Department as an associate professor in 1985.
He joined the linguistics department in 1992 and worked as chairperson for a long time. He retired in 2004.
Prof Humayun had taken part in a number of Bangladesh Television programmes and written many plays. He was president of the Chittagong chapter of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi, an organisation of artistes.
The researcher has authored a series of books on linguistics and the works of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. He has also edited the Sandwiper Itihas (History of Sandwip).
He lost his brother Jasim Uddin in Liberation War. One of the charges proved against Jamaat-e-Islami leader war criminal Mir Quasem Ali was killing Jasim, a teenaged freedom fighter.
