Khaleda went to Haque’s Banani DOHS residence and offered sympathies to the bereaved family.
The 87-year old former Major General died from a lung infection on Monday morning at Dhaka’s Apollo Hospital, barely 10 days after his wife Mumtaz Jahan Zebunissa Majid passed way.
The BNP Chairperson offered her condolences to the late leader’s daughter Simin Akhter, son Ishtiaq Majid and his wife Farzana Majid.
Haque’s younger son Imtiaz Majid’s mother-in-law Rubi Mostafiz, daughter’s husband, former ambassador Shahed Akhter, former army chief and BNP Standing Committee member Mahbubur Rahman, party Vice-Chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, former Home Minister retired Air Vice Marshal Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Khaleda’s advisor Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Ruhul Alam Chowdhury and party Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed and several others accompanied Khaleda.
The last time the BNP chief had come to the residence of Majid was during the anti-Ershad movements in the 1990s. He was the Liaison Committee head during the anti-Ershad movement.
Majid ul Haque was buried at Banani Military Graveyard after his namaz-e-janaza held at the Allahu Masjid in the Dhaka Cantonment after Asr prayers.
Born in 1926 at Magura, he went on to become a Major General in the Pakistan army during the late 1960s, one of the few Bengalis to rise that high in the military hierarchy of undivided Pakistan.
Bangladesh’s first military ruler Ziaur Rahman inducted Majid ul Haque as Minister for industries, railways and communication in his Cabinet in 1978. A year later, Majid ul Haque was elected to the parliament on a BNP ticket from Magura.
Later, he served as Minister for Water Resources and Agriculture in Khaleda Zia’s 1991-1996 government.
He also remained on the BNP Standing Committee for long.
In a condolence message, Khaleda expressed deep grief at the death and mentioned him as one of the persons who had spearheaded the anti-Ershad movement.
She said, “He was one of the pioneers of ‘90s democratic movement. His leading role in strengthening the democratic movement and organising the mass uprising will remain as a source of inspiration for the people.”
In another message, party’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed his condolences.
