‘Jamaat-Shibir behind DU clashes’

Jamaat-e-Islami supporters have come in for fierce criticism for a violent, anti-quota demonstration at Shahbagh.

‘Amra Muktijoddhar Sontan’ (We are the children of freedom fighters) has alleged that the ‘spawns’ of the Jamaat-e-Islami were involved in it.

They made this allegation on Thursday after violence rocked the Dhaka University area.

Another organisation, ‘Chhatra Sangram Parishad’, said the clashes had been provoked by Jamaat and its students’ wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir.

“Some Shibir activists, posing as ordinary students, and some reactionary individuals led the movement,” ‘Amra Muktijoddhar Sontan’ said in a statement on Thursday

“Those who want cancellation of Freedom Fighter and women’s quotas, are Jamaat’s spawns in the guise of general students.”

Unsuccessful students of the 34th BCS preliminary examinations were upset after results were published on Monday. The Public Service Commission (PSC) decided to review the results because of the protests.

But agitations began on Thursday morning demanding the cancellation of all quotas. The protestors even fought with the police.

They blamed the quota system for students being denied selection despite getting high marks.

But ‘Amra Muktijoddhar Sontan’ claimed in their statement that the agitation was intended to occupy Shahbagh, where the Ganajagaran Mancha had been formed, at a time when verdicts of Ghulam Azam and Mujahid were due at the ICT.

They alleged it was a plot to thwart the ongoing war crimes trials.

On the other hand, ‘Chhatra Sangram Parishad’ said in a press conference that they were not against the demands of the ‘general students’. They too wanted changes in the quota system.

Bangladesh Chhatra League President HM Badiuzzaman Sohag said that the quota system needed adjustments, not abolition. “But that does not justify violence.”

“Jamaat-Shibir is involved in this,” he said, claiming that some people were instigating violence with the help of outsiders to create tension on the campus.
Regarding the Chhatra League attack on the protestors, he denied his organisation’s involvement. “We will not take responsibility if anyone did it in an individual capacity.”
Pragatishil Chhatra Jote demanded a review of the quotas and punishment for those involved in the attacks on the campus.
Chhatra Union President SM Shuvo said the issue was not new. “Fifty-six percent of the appointments in government service are made through quotas and the remaining 44 percent on the basis of merit. This is irrational.”
He condemned the police action on the campus and added that the silence of the administration was not acceptable.
