The protesters from Shahbagh’s ‘Prajanma Chattar’ had offered talks on Tuesday after the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed organisation which had announced a strike in Chittagong to thwart the rally of the people’s movement on Wednesday.
Police prohibited all forms of gatherings after the strike call was made to avert violence.
A statement from ‘Ganajagaran Mancha’ on Tuesday night also said a team of representatives will go to Chittagong on Wednesday.
Moinuddin Ruhi, Hefazat’s Joint Secretary, told bdnews24.com on Wednesday, “They are enemies of Islam, no man who loves the Prophet can sit in talks with them.”
He then said Imran H Sarkar, the convenor of the Blogger and Online Activists’ Network and ‘Ganajagaran Mancha’ spokesperson, was an ‘atheist’.
When asked if there was a direct offer for discussion from ‘Ganajagaran Mancha’ he said, “We did not receive any proposal from them and accepting such a proposal is out of the question.”
The platform for the people’s uprising is seeking maximum penalty to the war criminals and ban on Jamaat-e-Islami.
It said, “We are respectful to the religious sentiments of people from all faiths. There is no scope to spread misinformation about this massive non-violent protest which has been welded out of people’s participation.”
About the programme by Hefazat-e-Islam, the Mancha said, “Jamaat-e-Islami and their student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir are trying to use their (Hefazat’s) position to unleash terror and cause confusion among Muslims across the country.”
Hefazat leader Ruhi said, “The anti-Islamist atheist bloggers will be resisted the day they come to Chittagong.”
Meanwhile, law enforcers in Feni on Wednesday prevented a delegation of the ‘Ganajagaran Mancha’, led by its frontline leader Imran H Sarkar, from visiting Chittagong ‘due to security reasons’.
Imran, along with his team, was heading towards Chittagong to hold a meeting with the leaders of Hefazat.
About Hefazat’s decision, Bangladesh Chhatra Moitree President Bappaditya Basu, one of the organisers of the Shahbagh protests, told bdnews24.com, “Since we’re bloggers, we’ll try to dispel their misgivings about us. We’ll also try to make them understand that our movement isn’t against any religion, rather it’s against the anti-liberation forces.”
