The 13th National Parliament is set to begin its journey on Thursday, marking the formal end of the interim period and the return of elected governance 20 months after the fall of the previous regime.
The first session of 2026 is being described in official invitations as a "historic moment for the rebirth of parliamentary democracy".
The day’s proceedings will go beyond traditional formalities.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman is scheduled to table 133 ordinances issued during the interim tenure.
The vast list of ordinances includes crucial structural changes to the Bangladesh Bank, local government laws, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, and the controversial Special Security Force Act.
Notably, it also includes the "July Uprising Memorial Museum Ordinance 2025" and the "July Mass Uprising (Protection and Liability Determination) Ordinance, 2026".
According to the schedule, the session will commence at 11am with the election of the speaker and deputy speaker.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as the leader of the House, has been entrusted by the BNP parliamentary party to nominate candidates for these top posts.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin will deliver his inaugural address to the House at 2pm.
Following parliamentary tradition, a motion of thanks will later be discussed by lawmakers.
The last parliamentary session under the Awami League administration concluded on Jul 3, 2024.
Following the student-led mass uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina, the interim government oversaw state reforms before holding the general election on Feb 12, which saw the BNP secure an absolute majority.
The new MPs were sworn in on Feb 17.
Security has been blanketed across the parliament area, with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police banning all rallies, processions, and the carrying of weapons or explosives in the vicinity to ensure a smooth transition to the new legislative term.
