It was the most unfortunate incident my entire family witnessed in its history,” said Shamsuzzaman, an acclaimed antagonist and comedian in films and dramas.
The tragedy unravelled before his eyes at his Sutrapur residence in old part of the capital on Mar 13 last year.
His younger son ATM Khalequzzaman Kushol killed his elder brother ATM Kamaluzzaman Kabir and was accused by his father of the murder.
Police arrested Kushol immediately after a case was filed.
Shamsuzzaman was testifying before the Dhaka’s First Speedy Trial Tribunal of Judge Shahed Nur Uddin.
It was around 2:30pm to 3pm, when Shamsuzzaman heard a sound at the entrance to his residence and rushed there to find a locksmith breaking open the gate.
“Asked who sent him, he said it was Kabir. I found Kamal (Kabir) standing by the entrance and told him that all of this would have been unnecessary had he knocked,” Shamsuzzaman recalled.
“Why were you to bring the locksmith?”
“I had an argument with him. Ill-tempered Kabir started chiding me at one stage. I slapped him. Kushol woke up by the time and came out of his room and asked (Kabir) ‘Why had he raised his hand on me?’”
“I found Kabir on the bed bleeding profusely at one stage of the argument. I was fainted at that moment.”
“At that time I heard Kushol saying, ‘I will not escape, you save (the life of) Kabir Bhai.”
Kabir was dead by the time he was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Shamsuzzaman even identified Kushol standing in the dock as the accused after completing his deposition.
The defence lawyer questioned Shamsuzzaman after his testimony.
The court adjourned the case hearing until Feb 19.
The court indicted Kushol on Oct 31 last year after police submitted the charge sheet on Jun 25.
