A fatal road crash has killed five passengers after a car smashed into a stationary truck on the expressway in Faridpur’s Bhanga.

The accident occurred at Maligram on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway around 4am on Tuesday, Shibchar Highway Police chief Mizanur Rahman said.

He said the vehicle was travelling from Dhaka to Jashore when it struck a gas cylinder-laden truck parked by the roadside at high speed.

The impact wedged the car under the truck, killing four people on the spot.

Another passenger, identified only as Rakib, passed away after being rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital alongside other injured victims.

The dead were identified as Nurjahan, 50, her 24-year-old son Arif Islam, Ayesha Begum, 28, Rakib, 18, and the young driver of the car.

Two children, Ashraful Hossain, 7, and Tashfia, 3, were injured and are receiving treatment at hospital.

All the casualties were passengers of the car.

Officer Mizanur said police and members of the Bhanga Fire Service and Civil Defence launched a rescue operation after receiving news of the crash.

Efforts are under way to establish the identity of the driver.

Police have seized both the truck and the car involved in the accident.

Bhanga Fire Service Station Manager Abu Jafar said rescuers rushed to the scene and began recovery efforts immediately.

“The driver was trapped inside the mangled wreckage lodged beneath the rear of the truck,” he said. “Firefighters later cut through the damaged vehicle and recovered his body.”
