The biennial election of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) will be held on May 23.
The date was shared with the media on Monday night in a notice signed by Monowara Begum, chairman of the Chamber’s Election Board and Director of the Local Government Division in Chattogram.
According to the notice, voting will take place from 9am to 4pm at the World Trade Centre in Agrabad.
The election will be held for 18 directorial posts in the ordinary (general) and associate groups of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
On Sept 9, 2024, the entire board of directors of the chamber resigned. Since then, three different administrators were appointed in three phases.
Later, although the election schedule was announced on Nov 1 last year, the election was postponed several times due to multiple writ petitions and decisions by the arbitration court.
In the Chittagong Chamber, businesspeople elect 12 directors from the general category and six directors from the associate category through voting. In addition, there are opportunities to elect three directors from the town association and three from the trade group category. The president and two vice-presidents are elected by the votes of the directors.
This time, a total of six directors from the town association and trade group categories are set to be elected unopposed.
Two panels are contesting in this year’s Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry election. One is the United Business Forum, led by former FBCCI director Amirul Haque, and the other is the Somomona Parishad, led by former senior vice-president of the chamber SM Nurul Haque.
