Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for a concerted effort to build a liberal democratic state, emphasising that politicising education, research, and the arts is never a hallmark of a civilised society.
Speaking at the Ekushey Padak award ceremony on Thursday, he said education, research, and the practice of arts and literature, alongside science and technology, must advance the nation.

“The government is working to establish a morally sound, liberal democratic system, guided by the wisdom of the country’s intellectuals,” he said at the Osmani Memorial Hall, where nine distinguished individuals and one music band were honoured.
Tarique noted that while politicians govern, scholars and eminent figures play a crucial role in guiding society.
“The more accomplished individuals a state nurtures, the more enlightened it becomes in terms of prosperity and morality. This principle inspired the country’s first post-independence Ekushey Padak in 1976 under the nation’s founder, late president Ziaur Rahman.”
The prime minister highlighted the historical significance of the awards, saying: “Ekushey Padak is more than a medal. It commemorates Bangladesh’s historic journey from the 1952 Language Movement to today, recognising those who enriched the nation in education, literature, arts, and research.”
Originally awarded in three categories, the accolade now honours contributions across at least 12 fields, including the Language Movement, Liberation War, education, research, arts, science, and technology.
“May the streams of knowledge, science, and literature flow wider and deeper,” he said, adding that the government will support efforts to advance education, research, and the arts.
On February’s historical importance, he said: “The 21st of February embodies our national consciousness. I hope the day comes when Bengali language and literature illuminate the global literary world.”
Tarique paid tribute to the Language Movement martyrs saying, “May Allah accept their sacrifice as martyrdom. My heartfelt congratulations to all Ekushey Padak recipients today.”
