A lawyer has died after being fatally injured amid a clash near the court premises in Chattogram.
Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, or United Sanatan Awakening Alliance, spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was being taken to jail during that time.
The lawyer, Saiful Islam Alif, 35, was killed following an attack on Tuesday on the road leading to the district collector's office and the court.
Nazim Uddin Chowdhury, president of the Chattogram Bar Association, told bdnews24.com that Saiful had been attacked on the road on his way home from the court.
He succumbed to his injuries at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Nazim claimed that Saiful was 'killed' with a sharp weapon. Twenty other lawyers were injured during the clash.
Brigadier General Taslim Uddin, director of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said seven people had been brought to the hospital following the clash near the court building.
Among them, Saiful was declared dead by the doctor soon after being brought to the hospital.
“He has signs of severe head injuries. The remaining six are being treated at the hospital,” he added.
Spokesperson of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Kazi Md Tareq Aziz said, “Based on the information we received from the hospital, we have learnt that the deceased was brought from around Laldighi.”
Saiful was a resident of Chunati in Lohagara Upazila of Chattogram.
Chinmoy Das, arrested in Dhaka, was produced before the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
After he was brought to the court amid tight security, members of the Sanatani or Hindu community started gathering in the court premises.
The followers of the Hindu monk began to chant slogans in protest at the court premises as he was not granted bail.
Around 12:15pm, Chinmoy was brought down from the court building under the security of police-BGB-APBn members and boarded on a prison van parked below.
At this time, angry people from the Sanatani community started protesting around the prison van. Monks were seen along with ordinary people in the crowd.
Three and a half hours later, the law-enforcing forces removed the protesters by throwing sound grenades on the court premises and taking the spokesperson of the Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote to jail.
Police were able to fully disperse the protesters around 2:45pm.
As they dispersed, they created unrest by vandalising motorcycles parked on both sides of the road and throwing bricks at the lawyers' building.
Later, a clash broke out in front of the Muslim High School on the road leading down from the court, where locals chased away the protesters towards Harijan Para.
The two sides engaged in a prolonged running battle, after which some of the injured were taken to the hospital.
