More than two dozen murders and over a hundred unnatural deaths have occurred in Cumilla over the past two months. During the same period, more than 600 cases were filed over various crimes.

The data was presented at the monthly meeting of the district law and order committee held on Sunday in the deputy commissioner’s office.

The meeting was chaired by Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Md Reza Hasan and attended by Police Superintendent Md Anisuzzaman, along with officials from different units of the law enforcing agencies and heads of various government departments.

A total of 27 murders were reported in the district during April and May; among them, 17 people were killed in May alone. A total of 27 cases were filed in connection with these murders.

During the same period, 105 people died unnatural deaths in different parts of the district.

Meanwhile, 28 people were killed in road accidents in May alone. In the same month, police arrested 30 members of juvenile gangs in various operations.

In addition, 612 cases were filed in the district in May for various crimes. These included 12 rape cases, 24 cases of violence against women and children, and 266 cases under the Narcotics Control Act, the highest among all categories.

To curb the deterioration of law and order, the meeting adopted several strict measures aimed at eliminating drugs, preventing mob violence, and improving overall security in the district.

It was also announced that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified activities along the district’s 100-kilometre border area to prevent killings, push-ins, and smuggling.

Police Superintendent Md Anisuzzaman said at the meeting that the district police are committed to maintaining regular law and order and eliminating drugs.

However, he added: “We seek the cooperation of people from all walks of life to make these efforts more dynamic.”

Deputy commissioner and president of the district law and order committee Md Reza Hasan said, “We urge everyone to help keep the district’s law and order situation, as well as all other conditions, normal.”

He hoped that the overall situation in the district would improve before the next meeting of the committee.
