A Dhaka court has placed retired lieutenant colonel Afzal Naser, a former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), on a fresh three-day remand in a case over the death of BNP activist Mokbul Hossain.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order following a hearing, confirmed Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector Rokonuzzaman.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police produced the suspect in court on Tuesday after a previous stint in custody, seeking an additional five days to interrogate him.
Additional Public Prosecutor Azizul Huq Didar argued for the necessity of further questioning to uncover details regarding the incident.
Defence lawyers presented a petition seeking to cancel the remand and petitioned for bail, which the court ultimately rejected.
This marks the latest in a series of remand phases for Afzal.
He was previously remanded for three days on Apr 5, another three days on Apr 8, and two days on Apr 12 in the same case.
The case stems from a violent police crackdown on BNP activists in the capital's Naya Paltan area on Dec 7, 2022, ahead of the party's planned mass rally.
Police and detectives allegedly conducted a raid on the BNP’s central office, resulting in vandalism and clashes, according to the case statement.
The use of "cocktails, tear gas, and live ammunition" left hundreds of activists injured.
Mokbul, a BNP activists, succumbed to gunshot wounds during the confrontation.
On Sept 30, 2024, a man named Mahfuzur Rahman filed a case naming 256 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over the incident.
Afzal was apprehended by detectives on the night of Mar 29 in Mirpur DOHS.
