Ebtedayee madrasa teachers have demanded the resignation of Education Advisor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar after he allegedly refused to meet a delegation sent to hand over a memorandum.
The teachers accused the advisor of showing disrespect by not granting them an audience, calling it an “insult” to the wider teaching community.
Kazi Mokhlesur Rahman, chairman of the Swatantra Ebtedayee Madrasa Shikkhok Oikyo, said outside the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon: “Our plan was to submit a memorandum to the education advisor and discuss our demands.
“But as we began our march, we were blocked by law enforcers.”
He added that, with police assistance, a 15-member delegation managed to reach the education ministry and submit the memorandum -- but the advisor did not meet them.
“By refusing to see us, he has behaved in a disrespectful manner towards teachers. This is not just an insult to us, but to the entire teaching profession,” Mokhlesur said.
“Such behaviour is unacceptable. The education advisor has dishonoured teachers. That’s why we are demanding his resignation.”
Earlier in the day, Ebtedayee teachers began their pre-announced march from the National Press Club, and were intercepted by police near the Kadam Foara intersection.
Following that, a 15-member group went to the Secretariat to discuss their demands, as planned.
The teachers have now announced a fresh protest rally at 11am on Thursday in front of the Press Club.
Among their other demands are:
• Immediate implementation of the nationalisation announced on Jan 28 this year.
• Quick approval of 1,089 files sent by the Technical and Madrasah Education Division to the Chief Advisor’s Office for MPO enlistment.
• Issuance of a notice inviting applications for MPO enlistment from recognised but non-grant Ebtedayee madrasas.
• Creation of pre-primary teaching posts similar to those in primary schools.
• Establishment of a separate directorate for Ebtedayee madrasas.
