Protesting Students from seven colleges, demanding the final issuance of the Dhaka Central University ordinance, have vacated the road after announcing a “Mass Gathering and Ordinance Stage”.
On Thursday, they blocked the Science Laboratory intersection from 12:45pm, obstructing the road for five hours before leaving at 5:45pm.
Traffic gradually returned to normal afterwards.
Student representative and Dhaka College student Md Naeem Howlader told reporters that the “Ordinance Stage” would attract the attention of national leaders, and the next course of action would be decided through collective discussions.
During the blockade, vehicles were halted, leaving commuters stranded. Students later extended the disruption to the Technical crossing.
Naeem expressed regret over the public inconvenience, stressing the movement’s peaceful intentions over the past 16 months, and said the students had assisted anyone facing emergencies or business disruptions.
A Dhaka University bus was vandalised during the protest, and two students were injured.
Howlader said the violence occurred after attempts at dialogue with some university students escalated into scuffles.
Earlier on Wednesday, students had blocked Science Laboratory, Technical, Mohakhali Amtoli, and Science Laboratory crossings demanding the ordinance.
Partial road protests were also held in December at the education ministry, after which the authorities had promised the ordinance would be issued in early January.
On Thursday, protesters urged the Advisory Council to approve the Dhaka Central University Act 2025 and issue the final ordinance by the end of the day.
The seven colleges involved are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Mirpur Bangla College, and Titumir Government College.
