The interim government has dismissed Assistant Commissioner Tapashee Tabassum Urmi for posting a social media status questioning the legitimacy of the administration and criticising Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notice confirming this major disciplinary measure under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, saying that the allegations against her had been proven.
Urmi, who was serving as an executive magistrate in Lalmonirhat, had been suspended since Oct 7, two days after making the post.
A defamation case against her is ongoing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
The dismissal order details the full course of action taken against her, from the allegations, the show-cause notice, her response, to the departmental inquiry and recommendation.
On Oct 6, two months after Yunus took office, Urmi made a Facebook post criticising both the interim government and Yunus himself.
In her post, she wrote: “The chief advisor of an unconstitutional interim government says the reset button has been pressed. The past has been erased. He has wiped out the entire history of the country with a click of his reset button. It’s that simple. But your countdown has already begun, sir.”
The controversial post led to Urmi’s removal from field administration. She was made an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the ministry.
Two days later, on Oct 7, she was suspended, and a departmental case was initiated against her.
During the proceedings, she failed to appear in person at the ministry, citing security concerns, and the inquiry continued under a designated investigation officer.
According to the notification, the investigation found her guilty of “misconduct” under Rule 3(Kha) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018.
Later, the authorities decided to impose the maximum penalty of dismissal from service under Rule 4(3)(Gha) of the same regulation.
The decision was made after consultation with the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC).
