Former reserved seat MP Sabina Akter Tuhin has formally been arrested in a case of attempt to murder during the July Uprising, with a court denying her bail the same day.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the arrest order on Thursday on the investigating officer's application, Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam said.
On her way to prison after the order, Tuhin told journalists: "Today is my child's birthday. With so many cases, how will I ever get out? I'll get bail when I die."
She had earlier been taken into custody on Jun 23 last year by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from her home in Nawabganj, Dhaka, and sent to prison in an anti-terrorism case filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Apr 4, 2024.
That case alleged that former Jubo Mohila League vice-president Ishrat Jahan Nasrin and 14 to 15 others, along with banned Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists, held a procession outside the planning ministry near Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
The accused were alleged to have demanded former interim government chief advisor’s resignation and conspired to endanger national unity, public safety, and sovereignty in order to advance a banned organisation's activities.
Mirpur Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Rashedul Islam, the investigating officer in the attempted murder case, applied on May 19 to have Tuhin formally arrested in connection with the attack on a man identified only as Kabir in Mirpur-10 during the Uprising.
The court fixed Thursday for a hearing in her presence.
In court, Tuhin said: "Do I have wings? They are saying I went to so many places and did so many things in a single day."
After the arrest order, her lawyer Khayer Uddin Shikder sought bail before Metropolitan Magistrate Raju Ahmed's court. The application was rejected.
According to the case details, on Jul 20, 2024, Kabir and his brother-in-law were selling clothes from a three-wheeler in Mirpur-10 when Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League activists, armed with firearms, opened fire on students in the area with the intent to kill.
Kabir was wounded in the shooting and later treated at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, also known as Pongu Hospital, and the National Institute of Ophthalmology.
He filed the case at Mirpur Model Police Station on Jan 25 last year.
Tuhin is also a defendant in a case involving participation in a “Joy Bangla Brigade” Zoom meeting, allegedly to plot the overthrow of the then interim government and engage in anti-state activities.
That case names 286 defendants, including Awami League president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, with 30 currently in prison.
Tuhin took her oath as a reserved seat MP for Seat 35 in March 2014. She later failed to secure the Awami League nomination for Dhaka-14 in the 11th national election and announced she was quitting politics in protest when the reserved seat also did not come her way.
In the 12th national election, she again failed to get the Awami League nomination and stood as an independent against Jubo League leader Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, who won the seat and went to parliament.
