The Election Commission (EC), led by AMM Nasir Uddin, has finalised a detailed action plan ahead of the 13th general election.
Among more than two dozen tasks outlined, the plan includes dialogue with political parties and other stakeholders starting in the last week of September.
Although the polling day and election schedule have not yet been fixed, the plan has been drawn up with voting tentatively set for the first half of February.
The commission approved the action plan on Wednesday, and EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed presented its details at a press conference at the EC building on Thursday afternoon.
Dialogue with parties and stakeholders set to begin in the last week of September, expected to continue for about one and a half months.
Voter list update: The second phase of a draft voter list has already been published and will be finalised on Aug 31. Another list is set to be published by Oct 31, after which the final voter roll will be published on Nov 30.
Electoral laws and rules: Representation of the People Order (RPO) and other electoral laws are scheduled to be amended by Aug 31.
The commission also plans to revise the law on constituency boundaries, amend the Voter List Act, finalise policies and management for polling centres, and finalise guidelines for domestic and international observers as well as journalists.
Political party registration: Primary registration in mid-September with final notification within the same month.
Setting constituency boundaries: Finalisation and gazette publication in early September, with GIS maps to be prepared and published by Sept 30.
Postal voting and ballots: Approval of projects, finalisation of software, development of a mobile app, registration and practice modules, and promotional work are scheduled for completion by October. Ballot papers will be sent abroad in November and to prisons two weeks before election day.
Law and order measures: Meetings will be held in September, 15 days before the election schedule is announced, and again after the schedule is declared.
Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has announced that the general election will be held before Ramadan in the first half of February next year.
He has also sent a letter to the Election Commission in this matter.
The chief election commissioner has said the election schedule will be announced roughly two months ahead of polling.
Following discussions in its meeting, the EC said that the schedule will be declared in the first half of December.
