Police have arrested four people from four districts over allegations of online fraud by promising to leak question papers for the ongoing Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations.
Munshi Shahabuddin, joint commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit, disclosed the arrests at a press conference on Saturday.
The detainees are Md Sifat Ahmed Sajib, 22, Md Salman, 22, Md Mesbaul Alam Mahin, 19, and Md Mohiduzzaman Munna, 19.
According to Shahabuddin, the CTTC launched the operation after monitoring a Facebook page titled "SSC-2026 Question Paper Leak Group" on Monday, a day before the examinations began.
Sifat was first apprehended in Ashulia’s Zirabo on Monday night.
His interrogation led to the arrests of Salman in Bogura’s Dhunat and Mesbaul in Dinajpur’s Nawabganj on Thursday.
Mohiduzzaman was later detained in Sirajganj’s Tarash on Friday.
“We found evidence of their involvement in question-leak-related scams on their mobile phones, which have since been seized,” said Shahabuddin.
A case has been filed at the Ramna Model Police Station, and operations are ongoing to arrest others involved in the ring, police said.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) issued a statement demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the scams while sharply criticising Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon.
In a media statement on Saturday, the party argued that the ministry’s administrative oversight has been lax.
"Teachers and invigilators are sufficient for monitoring exam halls. The minister’s job is not to create 'reels' while visiting exam centres, but to focus on his primary responsibility of administrative supervision," the statement read.
