A clash breaks out among students at Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail while watching the Argentina-Egypt World Cup football match, leaving at least 10 people injured, including an assistant proctor.
Angry students smashed window panes of an academic building and flowerpots outside it during the clash on Tuesday night, according to eyewitnesses.
Though the violence subsided that night, tensions continued to grip the campus till Wednesday morning.
Seven injured students are undergoing treatment at Tangail Medical College Hospital as of Wednesday morning.
One student, in critical condition, has been admitted to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital, while Assistant Proctor Abdul Kuddus has received first aid.
"The clash broke out among students watching the match between Argentina and Egypt. I was injured by a brick while trying to calm the students down. I was later given first aid," Kuddus tells bdnews24.com.
He says at least 10 students were injured and admitted to Tangail General Hospital.
Students say an argument first broke out between students of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department and the Food Technology and Nutritional Science (FTNS) department over seating arrangements before the match on Tuesday night.
The dispute later turned into a scuffle and then a clash.

Members of the proctorial body rush to the spot and broker a truce between the two sides, bringing the situation under control. But shortly after the match ended, a second clash broke out between ICT students and students of the FTNS and statistics departments.
Students from the three departments engaged in a chase-and-counter-chase near the university's third academic building.
At one point, ICT students took up positions in front of the third academic building, while FTNS and statistics students gather in front of Abdul Mannan Hall.
Eyewitnesses say ICT students later returned to their departments, but around 1am, a fresh clash erupted at the university's first academic building involving students from the ICT, FTNS, statistics and chemistry departments.
The clash, which lasted nearly an hour, spreads tension across the campus. The situation is brought fully under control around 3am through joint intervention by the proctorial body and teachers from various departments.
"A scuffle broke out among students over a trivial matter. The proctorial body and teachers later brought the situation under control," university Proctor Monir Morshed said.
"Discussions are under way with the vice-chancellor and the students involved to reach an amicable resolution."
The proctor says the campus situation is now normal.
"Several students were admitted to the hospital at night. They have been given first aid," says Khondaker Sadikur Rahman, superintendent of Tangail General Hospital.
