Bangladesh is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for another one to two days under the influence of a low-pressure system and the active monsoon, the Met Office says.
The downpours could trigger landslides in the hill districts, where continuous rainfall over recent days has already loosened the soil, meteorologist Abdul Hamid told bdnews24.com.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the well-marked low over the Bay of Bengal has moved to northwestern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas of India.
It is projected to drift west-northwest before turning northeast.
The system has created a steep pressure gradient over the northern Bay, raising the likelihood of squally weather over the sea, coastal areas and ports.
The Met Office has asked Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports to keep local cautionary signal 3 hoisted.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay have been advised to remain near the coast until further notice.
The disaster management ministry says floods, hill runoff and landslides have killed 30 people in Chattogram Division over the past five days, including 19 in Cox's Bazar, five each in Chattogram and Bandarban, and one in Rangamati.
Authorities have prepared 1,427 shelters across the five affected districts.
