The government has promoted 179 deputy secretaries to the rank of joint secretary in the largest single bureaucratic promotion since the BNP assumed office after the parliamentary election.
The public administration ministry issued two gazette notifications on Thursday, promoting 172 officials in the first and seven more in the second.
The promotions followed the prime minister's approval after a summary was sent to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) earlier in the day.
This marks the largest round of simultaneous promotions within the civil service since the BNP swept to power following their victory in the 13th parliamentary election.
According to the official gazette, the promoted officials can submit their joining letters directly to the senior secretary of public administration ministry, or online via email ([email protected]).
The ministry officials said this round of promotions to joint secretary primarily covers officers from 25th-batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS), alongside previously overlooked officials from the 24th-batch.
Recommendations had been made to elevate nearly 190 officials from the 24th-batch -- including 138 from the administration cadre and others from different cadres -- from deputy secretary to joint secretary.
During the tenure of the interim government, 80 officers from the 24th-batch were promoted to joint secretary. Meanwhile, 80 out of some 170 officers from the 25th-batch were taken into consideration during this cycle.
Among the 25th-batch officials, 80 have already attained the rank of deputy secretary, with many currently holding key government positions, including serving as deputy commissioners (DCs) across multiple districts.
Two deputy secretaries from the 15th-batch, whose promotions had been stalled for a prolonged period, have also been elevated to the rank of joint secretary.
