People in parts of Bangladesh are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr, observing the festival on the same day as Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries.
Eid is being marked in a number of villages across several districts, including Chandpur, Jamalpur, Satkhira and Jhalakathi, where local congregations were held on Friday morning, a day before the official observance of the festival in the rest of the country.
Men and women offered prayers separately before exchanging Eid greetings after the prayers.
Although the Shawwal moon was not sighted in Bangladesh, residents in some of these areas have long observed Eid a day earlier on the basis of international moon sightings and local religious tradition.
CHANDPUR

Eid is being celebrated in more than 50 villages in Chandpur.
At Sadra Darbar Sharif in Hajiganj Upazila, the main Eid congregation was held at 9:30am, led by the Mufti Zakaria Chowdhury Al Madani.
Mufti Zakaria said people in those villages had long carried out religious observances on the basis of international moon sightings.
Md Zainal Abedin, a resident of Sadra village in Hajiganj, said the late Pir Mohammad Ishaq Chowdhury of Sadra Darbar Sharif introduced the practice in 1928, based on the Quran and Hadith.
He said the cleric's six sons had continued to follow and promote the same tradition after his death.
JAMALPUR

Eid prayers were held on Friday morning at mosques and Eidgah grounds in 21 villages in Jamalpur.
Azim Uddin Master, imam of the Master Bari Jame Mosque in Balar Dia under Sarishabari Municipality, said local residents had long followed Middle Eastern timings in observing Ramadan and other religious rituals.
He said Eid-ul-Fitr was no exception.
“The time difference between Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh is only a few hours, so we celebrate Eid a day earlier,” he said, adding that more than 100 men and women had joined the congregation there.
SATKHIRA

People in at least 20 to 25 villages in Satkhira also celebrated Eid a day early.
The main congregation was held at 8:23am on Friday at Kushkhali Baukola Jame Mosque, led by imam Mohabbat Ali.
He said that if the Hijri New Year was observed on the same day across the world, then it was also reasonable to observe fasting and Eid on the same day.
