A court has issued arrest warrants against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 40 other absconding suspects in two cases over the killings of freight truck driver Md Hossain and autorickshaw driver Shobuj in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur during the 2024 July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam indicted 64 suspects in the two cases on Monday. Of them, 41 suspects were shown as “absconding” and he ordered arrest warrants against them.
Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid and Quayyum Hossain Nayan represented the state at the hearing.
Hasina, who is currently in India, is accused in both cases. She has been registered as an “absconding” suspect in both.
MD HOSSAIN MURDER
Hossain was shot dead in Mohammadpur on Jul 19, 2024, in the midst of the July Uprising. Two others named Sajjad and Shahin were injured alongside him.
Hossain's mother Mosammat Reena Begum filed a case over his death on Aug 31, 2024, accusing 16 people, including Hasina.
After an investigation, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Akramuzzaman submitted a chargesheet to the court on Nov 23 last year, accusing 34 people, including Hasina.
Of the suspects, 20 are absconding. Arrest warrants have been issued against them.
Apart from Hasina, Awami League General Secretary and former road transport minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, and leaders Asif Ahmed, Tarequzzaman Rajib, Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, Nur Mohammad Sentu are among the accused.
Four suspects, including former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak and former MP Sadek Khan, are in jail, while 10 others are out on bail.
SHOBUJ MURDER
Shobuj, 22, was shot in front of Mayur Villa in Mohammadpur on Aug 4, near the end of the July Uprising. He later died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
On Sept 1, Shobuj's brother Monir Hossain filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station, naming 98 suspects and accusing 450-500 unidentified suspects.
Hasina, Quader, and Asaduzzaman were not initially named in the case dossier. However, after the investigation, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Mazharul Islam submitted a charge sheet to the court against 30 people, including the three senior members of the Awami League administration.
Of the suspects, 21 are absconding. Arrest warrants were issued against them on Monday. Former MPs Nanak, and Nur Nabi Chowdhury Shaon are also on the list.
Three of the suspects, including Sadek, are in jail. Another six are out on bail.
