The number of vehicles crossing the Dhaka-Tangail Jamuna Bridge Highway has increased ahead of the public holidays for Eid-ul-Azha. This has increased the rush of transports on the Jamuna Bridge.

A total of 32,659 vehicles crossed the bridge in the 24 hours from Saturday 12am to Sunday 12am. During this period, toll collection reached Tk 29.6 million.

Although slightly lower than the number in the previous 24 hours, the number is still nearly double the normal traffic volume, said Executive Engineer Syed Riaz Uddin of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office on Sunday morning.

He said that the number of vehicles crossing the bridge started increasing from Friday afternoon. From noon on Friday to noon on Saturday, nearly 35,000 vehicles had crossed the bridge. The number decreased slightly in the following 24 hours.

During this time, 16,753 vehicles heading toward northern Bangladesh crossed the bridge, generating Tk 14.9 million in tolls. On the other hand, 15,896 vehicles heading toward Dhaka crossed the bridge, with toll collections amounting to Tk 14.7 million.

Executive Engineer Riaz said that, to facilitate Eid travel, a total of 18 toll booths — nine on each side of the Jamuna Bridge — have been operating since Saturday. Among them, two separate booths on each side have been designated for motorcycles.

The official added that efforts are being made to keep toll collection running around the clock to ensure a smooth Eid travel.
