A fire has broken out on the engine of the ‘Balaka Commuter’ train in Netrokona’s Purbadhala Upazila.
No casualties have been reported in the incident.
Train service on the Mymensingh-Jaria rail line was suspended after the fire broke out.
The fire started around 11:30am on Wednesday, according to Md Zahirul Islam, station master of Netrokona’s Shyamganj Police Station.
The train left Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station at 5:40am and the fire broke out as it reached the Jaria-Jhanjail area, around 2 km away from Jaria Railway Station.
“Once the fire broke out, railway workers and passengers brought it under control,” Zahirul said. “Initially, we believe the fire may have occurred due to a technical glitch. Details will be available after tests and inspections are conducted.”
Another Jaria-bound local train is at Shyamganj Railway Station, he said. Its engine will be sent to the scene to rescue the stranded train. Once the process is complete, railway service will return to normal.
