Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep concern over the shooting of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, an independent candidate in the Dhaka-8 constituency and convenor of the Inqilab Moncho platform.
Hadi sustained serious injuries after being shot in the capital’s Bijoynagar area after Friday prayers.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by rickshaw following the incident.
Calling the attack “completely unacceptable” in an election atmosphere, Yunus said the incident was a grim reminder of the threats facing the country’s political environment during a sensitive time.
The chief advisor has ordered the authorities to ensure the highest level of medical care for Hadi and instructed the health ministry to closely monitor all treatment procedures.
He has also issued strict directives to law-enforcing agencies to launch a swift and comprehensive investigation, identify everyone involved, and bring them to justice.
The instructions include collecting evidence from the scene, taking statements from witnesses, reviewing CCTV footage, and determining whether any organised plan was behind the attack.
“No form of violence to disrupt the elections will be tolerated,” Yunus said.
“It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of the people and the free movement of candidates. Whoever is guilty will be brought to justice.”
The chief advisor urged all political parties, activists, and citizens to maintain peace and restraint so that the upcoming elections can proceed in a peaceful, participatory, and secure environment.
