Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said that around 1,500 cases over traffic violations been filed so far through surveillance by artificial intelligence (AI) cameras installed on roads across Dhaka to improve traffic management and reduce congestion.

He also revealed that at least 38,000 traffic summons remain pending, mainly due to complications such as changes in vehicle ownership, which have delayed the resolution of many cases.

The commissioner made these remarks on Tuesday while speaking to the media after inaugurating the AI camera-based traffic enforcement and vehicle monitoring system on Lake Road adjacent to the national parliament building and Zia Udyan.

Earlier in the day, he officially launched AI-powered traffic case enforcement at four intersections under the Tejgaon Traffic Division in Mohammadpur.

He said, "At present, AI cameras have been installed at 15 intersections across the capital. Today, four more intersections have been added, bringing the total to 19. Work is also under way to install AI cameras at other major intersections."

The DMP Traffic Division introduced the camera-based enforcement system to reduce the need for officers to stop vehicles on the road, thereby minimising inconvenience for motorists. The AI cameras have been programmed to detect violations of the Road Transport Act, 2018.

The initiative was formally inaugurated on Apr 29 at DMP headquarters by Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir.

On May 3, the police issued a public notice warning drivers and vehicle owners that traffic violations would be prosecuted based on video footage. After several days of trial operations, the automated enforcement system officially began operating at designated locations on May 7.

According to the DMP commissioner, approximately 1,500 cases have been filed using the new AI technology during its first two months of operation.

He added that copies of these digital traffic cases are currently being sent to vehicle owners by mail.

However, in some cases, notices are being delivered to previous owners because the official ownership records have not been updated following the sale or transfer of vehicles.

In response to a question on the issue, the commissioner said, "The number of pending summons continues to increase. According to our latest records, around 38,000 summons are currently pending."

When asked about battery-powered auto-rickshaws, he said that it is not possible for the DMP alone to remove them from the roads immediately.

"In this regard, we are working in coordination with the relevant ministry and other stakeholders," he added.

Earlier, Commissioner Mosleh Uddin had said that AI cameras had been installed at key intersections and accident-prone locations to ensure better traffic management and improve road safety.

"As a result, we have witnessed unprecedented and visible improvements in traffic management. The system has created a positive tendency for drivers to stay within their designated lanes and abide by traffic signals."

He said that the combination of traffic diversions and modern signal lights, together with AI surveillance, forms an important foundation for transforming Dhaka into a modern, smart city. To sustain this progress and strengthen enforcement of traffic laws, police are adopting even stricter technology-driven measures.

Regarding the AI camera system on Lake Road, he said: "If a vehicle exceeds the speed limit, changes lanes dangerously, if a motorcycle rider or passenger is not wearing a helmet, or if a vehicle is illegally parked or obstructs traffic, the AI cameras will automatically and accurately detect the violation. A digital traffic case will then be filed, which the driver and the vehicle owner will be able to resolve through a transparent process."
