A court has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to reinvestigate the murder case of Sharif Osman bin Hadi after hearing objections from a Inqilab Moncho leader to the chargesheet submitted by police.
The application for objection, filed by the platform’s member-secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, was accepted by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam on Thursday.
Prosecution Police Deputy Commissioner Mia Mohammad Ashis Bin Hasan said the court ordered the CID to submit its reinvestigation report by Jan 20.
The Detective Branch (DB) named 17 people in the original chargesheet filed on Jan 6.
Abdullah had requested two days to review the chargesheet, which the court granted, setting Thursday as the date for submission.
During the hearing, lawyer Mostafizur Rahman Mukul, representing the victim, expressed serious concerns over the chargesheet.
He argued it failed to establish the link between the planners and shooters, noting that Hadi, who was the convenor of the Inqilab Moncho, was a prominent figure targeted by a calculated plan, shot publicly to intimidate others speaking against fascism.
Mukul criticised the chargesheet for singling out minor figures, calling it inadequate in explaining how the shooters and planners evaded capture, and demanded a reinvestigation in the interest of justice.
Hadi, who rose to prominence for his role in the July Uprising and in the movement to ban the Awami League, had announced an independent candidacy for Dhaka-8 in the parliamentary elections.
On Dec 12, he was attacked during public outreach in Bijoynagar by assailants on a moving motorcycle, shot while riding a rickshaw.
Gravely, he was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, then transferred to Evercare Hospital and later flown to Singapore, where he died on Dec 18.
The murder case, initially filed as attempted murder on Dec 14, was later upgraded under Section 302.
Following CID’s reinvestigation, key suspect Faisal Karim Masud, ex-ward councillor Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi, and 15 others were accused, with five still at large.
The chargesheet claimed Hadi was killed due to political revenge and to disrupt his electoral campaign, with suspects allegedly infiltrating his campaign in a premeditated attack.
