Dhaka/Bhola, May 5 (bdnews24.com)—Former junior minister and BNP leader Mosharraf Hossain Shahjahan has died at the age of 73.
The veteran politician breathed his last at 9:30am on Saturday at Gulshan's United Hospital, where he was under treatment for heart ailment, his brother Golam Nabi Alamgir, also chief of Bhola district BNP, told bdnews24.com.
He was at the hospital for the last two weeks.
Shahjahan was elected a member of parliament from various constituencies in Bhola for six times.
Once a member of Awami League, Mosharraf joined BNP during its formation at the call of Ziaur Rahman. He was made the organising secretary of Khulna BNP. He was made the state minister for water resources in Khaleda Zia's 1991 cabinet and again for religious affairs in 2001.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in separate statements expressed condolences over his death. BNP leaders, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) leaders and Awami League leaders in Bhola also expressed their condolences.
His body was taken to his Gulshan-1 residence around noon. His brother Alamgir said that his body would be taken to Bhola for burial following a Namaaz-e-Janaza at the National Parliament's South Plaza.
A second Janaza is to be held at Bhola Government School grounds on Sunday morning after which he would be buried at his family graveyard besides Aliah Madrasah.
He has left behind a son and three daughters along with his wife.
