Former MP for Brahmanbaria-5 Fazlur Rahman Badal has been sent to jail pending trial over the attempted murder case of Sajib Uddin during the July Uprising protests at Dhaka’s Science Laboratory.
In a separate case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Police, former reserved seat MP and former Narsingdi municipality mayor Lokman Hossain’s wife, Tamanna Nusrat Bubly, has also been sent to jail.
The information was confirmed by Additional Public Prosecutor Md Shamsud Doha Sumon.
Police arrested Badal in Dhaka’s Nikunja on Sunday night around 10pm. On Monday, he was produced before the court where the investigation officer of New Market Police, SI Maruf Hasan, sought to keep him in jail.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ehsanul Islam granted the request and ordered him into custody.
Bubly was arrested in Mirpur and brought before the court on Monday. Tejgaon Police Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain Khan requested she be kept in jail, which was approved by Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajur Rahman.
According to the case documents, on Jul 19, 2024, Sajib, an activist of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, took part in protests at Science Laboratory intersection. At around 3:30pm, shots were fired at the procession, injuring Sajib, his friend Mehedi, and 10 others.
Sajib later filed a case with New Market Police Station, naming 47 suspects, including Badal.
According to Bubly’s case files, on Sept 24, activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations held a procession in Dhaka, detonating crude bombs to spread fear.
As police arrived, many tried to flee, but 25 were detained.
Police recovered Awami League banners and four crude bombs from the spot.
