Anti-discrimination Student Movement Coordinator Sarjis Alam has said Bangladesh's relations with India will be like that of neighbouring countries, depending largely on India's actions.
During a personal visit to Bogura on Friday evening, he told journalists: “If India thinks it can continue to shield the Awami League and exploit Bangladesh as it has for the past 16 years, it is mistaken. The people of Bangladesh will no longer allow such opportunities. Whether the relationship turns bitter or remains amicable will be determined by India’s actions.”
Sarjis, also the general secretary of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation, criticised the lack of development in Bogura, saying: “This is my first visit to Bogura. From what I’ve seen upon arrival, it feels like Bogura has faced discrimination for 16 years, possibly just because of its name. Over this period, no development has taken place here.”
Referring to sacrifices made during the student movement, he said Bogura had the highest number of martyrs in the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.
Sarjis accused some Indian media outlets of running communal propaganda and inciting tensions.
“There are spineless media houses in India, especially in West Bengal, pushing communal narratives to provoke unrest,” he said.
Sarjis also spoke about dismantling the “fascist system” in Bangladesh that he claims has gripped the nation for the past 16 years.
He added, “We are breaking down the 16-year-long fascist regime. Once that’s done, new appointments and systems are being put in place. Fascists are being identified one by one.”
Sarjis announced that a large event of the foundation would be held in Bogura in the future.
