Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has expressed hope that the death sentences handed down to the convicts in the rape and murder case of child Ramisa Akter can be carried out within the next three months.
He also said discussions have been held with the chief justice on the speedy disposal of the death reference and appeal proceedings in the murder case.
According to the minister, if the relevant bench of the Supreme Court gives the case priority and follows the proper legal procedures, “it will be possible to complete the process for executing the final verdict in this case within the next three months.”
Speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Law on Sunday, he said:
“We have a legal obligation to send the case file to the High Court Division for confirmation of the death reference within seven days. After that, a paper book must be prepared in every such case, and there is no opportunity to do this outside the court system. The paper book is prepared under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Subsequently, the Supreme Court disposes of these death penalty cases according to its schedule.”
The court has sentenced the accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter to death.
In addition, Sohel was fined Tk 500,000 and Swapna was fined Tk 200,000.
The court also ordered that their movable and immovable properties be sold to recover the fines and provide compensation to the victim’s family.
The verdict was delivered around 11:45am on Sunday by Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Repression Prevention Tribunal.
The widely discussed case progressed from the start of the trial to the delivery of the verdict in just five working days.
