Police have initiated four separate cases against more than 3,000 people in connection with attacks and clashes during the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) event in Gopalganj.
The suspects in the cases include 358 activists from the Awami League and its associate organisations. The number of “unidentified” accused is 2,650.
A total of 277 people have been arrested in these cases.
The most recent case was filed at the Gopalganj Sadar Police Station on Friday night.
Gopalganj Sadar police chief Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman said Sub-Inspector Shamim Al-Mamun had initiated the case. The suspects in the case include a total of 404 activists from the Awami League and its affiliates.
The previous day, Inspector Ahmed Ali Biswas opened another case against 575 individuals, including activists of the same party and its allied groups, on similar charges in the same police station.
Two more cases were filed on Thursday night -- one at Kotalipara Police Station and the other at Kashiani -- following the deadly violence on Wednesday.
Kotalipara police outpost chief Abul Kalam Azad said the case under the Special Powers Act was filed by Sub-Inspector Uttam Kumar Sen. A total of 1,655 supporters from the Awami League and allied groups were accused in this case.
In Kashiani, 374 people have been accused in the case under the Special Powers Act, with Sub-Inspector Nur Alam Mia as the complainant, according to local police chief Kamal Hossain.
Altogether, police have arrested 277 people in the four cases.
Of them, 167 were detained on Thursday and 110 on Friday. Police have yet to provide information about Saturday’s arrests.
Gopalganj Sadar police apprehended 92 people, Muksudpur police 79, Kashiani police 57, Kotalipara police 22, and Tungipara police 27.
Inspector Serajul Islam of Gopalganj Court Police said 277 suspects arrested from five police stations were brought before the court. Later, the judge ordered them to be sent to the district jail.
Earlier on Wednesday, repeated attacks on the NCP march and rally led to clashes between the Awami League activists and members of police and the Army.
Eventually, the entire town descended into chaos.
Four people were killed during the clashes, with at least nine others shot and over 50 injured.
On Friday, 35-year-old Ramzan Munshi, an autorickshaw driver who was shot during the violence, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, bringing the death toll to five.
Central NCP leaders, who had been trapped in the police superintendent’s office that day, later left Gopalganj in an Army armoured vehicle.
