Flight Lieutenant Md Towkir Islam, who was killed in a Bangladesh Air Force jet crash in Diabari, has been given a final farewell with a ceremonial funeral parade at the BAF Base Bashar in Kurmitola.
The military tribute was followed by funeral prayers at 1pm on Tuesday, attended by senior government and military officials, as well as members of his family.
Home Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Chief of Army Staff Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, and the acting Navy chief were present during the prayers.
After the funeral, Towkir was flown to his hometown in Rajshahi by an Air Force jet for burial.
The young pilot died when his FT-7 BGI fighter jet, part of a routine training mission, crashed into a two-storey building at Milestone School and College on Monday afternoon.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR), the aircraft had taken off at 1:06pm from BAF Base Bir Uttam AK Khandaker in Kurmitola before experiencing mechanical failure.
In an official statement, the military’s media wing said Flight Lieutenant Towkir made “every effort” to steer the jet away from a densely populated area, to avoid a major disaster.
It added that the Air Force has formed a high-level investigation committee to determine the cause of the accident.
Full details will be shared once the probe is complete.
