Students at Rajshahi University have padlocked the offices of six deans they allege are aligned with the Awami League, demanding their resignation.
The action was taken on Sunday afternoon after the university administration decided to extend the deans’ terms despite the expiry of their official tenures, student representatives said.
Among those involved were Rajshahi University Senate member Akil Bin Taleb, Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) Cultural Affairs Secretary Zaid Hasan Zoha and Associate Cultural Secretary Rakibul Hasan, along with a few others.

“We must follow the path that martyred [political activist Sharif Osman bin] Hadi showed us against hegemony," said Akil.
However, RU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Farid Uddin Khan said that the deans have not resigned.
On Sunday morning, RUCSU General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar went to the chambers of some "pro-Awami League" deans and teachers. However, none of the deans were at the university.
"We have compiled a list of teachers who stood against the students during [the July Uprising], along with documentary evidence. All the pro-Awami League deans were called to resign. None of them are on campus," said Ammar.
"We will publish the final list in coordination with others and force them to resign accordingly."

Regarding the deans’ resignation, Pro-Vice Chancellor Farid told bdnews24.com: “We have yet to receive any such information. Although the term of the deans expired and were extended for various reasons, including convocation and upcoming admission exams.”
“If they are dismissed ahead of the exams, it will create a lot of complications. However, the vice-chancellor can make a decision.”
Attempts to contact Vice-Chancellor Saleh Hasan Naqib to confirm whether the deans had resigned were unsuccessful.
RU Senate member Akil said, "Even though a year has passed since the revolution, the followers of the Awami fascists remain safe on campus. However, those who led our movement are now being shot and killed on the streets. That's why we want no fascist collaborators to lead Bangladesh."
“Although the RU administration emerged on the blood of martyrs, they have failed to uphold the spirit of the revolution. They have not yet brought to justice those collaborators who held banners during attacks on students. We gave the administration time, but they failed to force the resignation of these fascists. That is why we, the forces of the Uprising, are now compelling them to resign today.”
However, RUCSU VP Mostakur Rahman Zahid said that although the union supports this demand, no official agenda or decision had been made.
“Even RUCSU wants the deans to resign. Although the Islami Chhatra Shibir had been demanding it for a long time, the administration remained silent," said Zahid.
Asked whether any meeting or session had been held on RUCSU’s position, Zahid said: “We didn’t have a meeting in this regard. The programmes were announced by Ammar in his personal capacity. RUSCU is not opposing it.”
