A legal action has been brought in the High Court seeking a ban on the Awami League and the cancellation of the party’s registration with the electoral commission for the alleged indiscriminate killing of students during the quota reform movement.
Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, executive director of the rights group SARDA Society, filed a writ petition on Monday.
He told the media that the petition also sought to make the current term of the interim government a minimum of three years in order to implement reforms to the country, and to order the return of Tk 11 trillion smuggled out of the country.
He also pushed for institutions named after Sheikh Hasina to be renamed.
Murad Bhuiyan also demanded that all officials appointed during the Awami League’s tenure, including the chairman of the PSC, all the departmental commissioners of the current administration, the deputy commissioners, UNOs, all divisional commissioners of police, SPs, and OCs be replaced and an impartial investigation commission be formed by the judiciary.
The cabinet secretary, Public Division secretary of the President’s Office, the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, the law secretary, the Election Commission secretary, the Bank and Financial Institutions Division secretary, the National Board of Revenue chairman, the Bangladesh Bank governor, the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence unit, and the coordinators and co-coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement have been named as the respondents to the petition.
Murad said the bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam will hear the petition on Tuesday.
