A Faridpur court has sentenced four men, including the victim’s brother-in-law, to imprisonment until death for the gangrape and murder of a woman.
District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal and District and Sessions Judge Shamima Parvin delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday.
The four convicts jailed until death are 38-year-old Jahangir Bepari – the brother-in-law of the victim who hailed from Sadarpur Upazila’s Krishnapur village, 38-year-old Kamrul Mridha and 43-year-old Ali Bepari from the same village, and 38-year-old Bakr Bepari from Chardari Krishnapur village.
Three of them, aside from Jahangir, were present in court when the verdict was announced. Later, they were taken to the district jail under police guard.
The court sentenced the four of them on two charges of rape and murder. They received jail until death over the murder and life in prison for the rape.
In addition to the prison terms, the judge fined them Tk 50,000 each over the murder and an additional Tk 100,000 each for the rape.
The case dossier says that on the afternoon of Oct 1, 2012 Jahangir Bepari and his gang went to his sister-in-law's house, telling her that her sister was visiting and urging her to open the door. As soon as his sister-in-law opened the door, Jahangir and the other suspects took turns raping her before strangling her to death.
The woman's mother filed a case against Jahangir and seven others at the Amli Court of Faridpur senior judicial magistrate No. 2 of Faridpur on Oct 23, 2012, accusing them of gangrape and murder.
On Nov 28, 2017, Sub Inspector Md. Abul Kalam of the Faridpur police’s Detective Branch submitted a chargesheet to the court against Jahangir and six others.
The court sentenced two other accused in the case, 63-year-old Momtaz Begum and 68-year-old Abul Kalam Bepari (the father of Ali Bepari) to five years in prison for destroying evidence related to the case.
They were also fined Tk 20,000 each. If they fail to pay, they will have to serve another six months in jail.
Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan said, “After the incident in 2012, the police station did not take up the case, so a case was filed in court. A total of seven officers, including the SI of Sadarpur Police Station, the OC (officer-in-charge), the CID of Dhaka, and finally the DB of Faridpur, investigated the case.
“Finally, five years after the incident, Faridpur DB SI Md Abul Kalam filed a complaint with the court. Although there was a long delay in this case, we (the state) are satisfied with getting justice in this rape and murder case.”
