One of the suspects in the case over the bludgeoning death of scrap metal and used wire trader Sohag, alias Lal Chand, in front of Mitford Hospital about a year ago has expressed a lack of confidence in the trial court.
On Sunday, suspect Mahmud Hasan Mohin formally moved a no-confidence plea against the court of First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Alamgir in Dhaka.
His lawyer Mashrur Hossain sought a postponement of the day's scheduled witness testimony.
The court granted the request, fixing Jul 27 for recording testimony, plaintiff's lawyer Ziaul Haque said.
Mashrur said heavy rain had kept him from attending the Jul 12 hearing on framing charges, but the court proceeded anyway.
"We no longer have confidence in that court," he said, adding that the no-confidence application, filed on behalf of seven suspects he represents, will be heard on Jul 22.
The suspects are—the suspects as Mahmud Hasan Mohin, Sarwar Hossain Titu, Monir alias Chhoto Monir, Alamgir, Monir alias Lomba Monir, Nannu alias Nannu Kazi, Sajib alias Sajib Bepari, Titon Gazi, Tarek Rahman Robin, Apu Das, Rizwan Uddin alias Abhijit Bosu, Jahirul Islam, Parvez, Sagar, Ruman Bepari, Abir Hossain, Md Jahir, Imran Hossain, Sharafat alias Shafiul Islam, Hossain Chowkidar, and Ziauddin Razi.
Among them, 10 are in prison while eight are fugitives. Three suspects are out on bail.
Sohag was bludgeoned to death in broad daylight in front of Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital on Jul 9, 2025, his body and head crushed with a concrete block.
A video of the killing went viral, sparking public outrage.
Police said everyone involved, including those accused of orchestrating the attack, already knew each other, with several suspects previously Sohag's business associates.
Those familiar with the parties said they had never imagined that a business dispute could escalate into such an extraordinarily brutal killing.
Sohag's sister Monjuara Begum filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station. Inspector Moniruzzaman submitted a chargesheet against all 21 suspects on Dec 8, 2025, but later sought further investigation after acknowledging errors in it.
Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter approved the request on Jan 20.
The case was reassigned to Inspector Shah Md Faisal Ahmed, who filed a revised chargesheet on May 10.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman transferred the case to the Metropolitan Sessions Court on Jun 21, and Acting First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mosaddek Minhaj framed charges on Jul 12, ordering the trial to begin.
