Sheikh Bashir Uddin, commerce advisor to the interim government, has been granted exemption from the murder case of Vargo Garment officer Sohan Shah during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam issued the order on Tuesday, based on an interim report submitted by the investigating officer.
The Deputy Commissioner of the DMP Prosecution Division Mia Mohammad Ashish bin Hasan confirmed Bashir’s exemption.
Typically, after investigation, the police submit a chargesheet or final report to the court. However, under Section 173(a) of the amended Criminal Procedure Code, enacted via ordinance on Jul 10, a suspect can be exempted based on an interim report during the investigation.
On Nov 24, SI Mostafizur Rahman of RAB-3 submitted an interim report to the court requesting Bashir’s exemption, noting that the investigation found no connection between him and the incident.
Sohan Shah, 30, was shot on Jul 19, 2024 in Rampura, outside a CNG refilling station, and died from his injuries on Aug 28 while undergoing treatment.
His mother, Sufia Begum, filed the case on Sept 19, 2024 against 57 individuals, including the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Bashir was listed as the 49th suspect, identified as an Awami League leader.
His brother, former MP of Jashore-1 constituency Sheikh Afil Uddin, was listed immediately before him as the 48th suspect. Both are sons of Sheikh Akij Uddin, founder of one of the country’s largest industrial conglomerates, Akij Group. Only Bashir Uddin received exemption on Tuesday.
