As many as 13 people have been injured, three of them critically, when residents attacked a mob of vandals at the home of AKM Mozammel Haque, former liberation war affairs minister of the Awami League, in Gazipur’s Dhirashram.
Police and military personnel later arrived at the scene to rescue the injured.
According to Metropolitan Police Assistant Deputy Commissioner (North) Rabiul Islam, they were swiftly transported to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for treatment following the incident that occurred around 8:30pm on Friday.
The former minister has not been seen in public since a case was filed against him in connection with casualties linked to the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
His village residence has remained locked since the filing of the case.
Witnesses say a mob forced open the lock of Mozammel’s home, shouting anti-dictatorship slogans as they began to vandalise the property on Friday night.
Alerted to the situation, a group of locals gathered at the scene and surrounded the mob.
Tensions escalated during a confrontation, resulting in an attack on the mob. Several were injured in the altercation, including individuals named Yakub, Siam, and Shuvo - all identified with a single name. The identities of others injured remain unknown.
Md Rabiul Hasan, the main organiser of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Gazipur, said: "Our people responded to reports that the village house of former liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque in the Dhirashram Dakhinkhan area had been vandalised and set on fire. Before they could assess the situation, locals launched an attack on them."
He confirmed that between 13 and 15 individuals were injured in the assault, with the condition of four to five reported as critical.
Tensions have been high in the area since a video of the incident went viral on Facebook.
