Extra police personnel deployed outside Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader’s Uttara residence over fears of a possible “mob” have been later withdrawn.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara Division Deputy Commissioner Md Mahidul Islam said security was bolstered from Saturday afternoon outside Quader’s house in Sector 7.
“There was a programme by a group called the ‘July Revolutionary Alliance’ in Uttara. Security was heightened to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said.
The group, which had been calling for the banning of the Jatiya Party and demanding that those responsible for the attack on Gono Odhikhar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur be brought to justice, held its programme peacefully.
"Everything concluded without any issues," the officer said. “There is now no extra police presence outside GM Quader’s residence.”
The additional police personnel were withdrawn in the evening.
Quader’s Press Secretary Khandaker Delwar Jalali said the government deployed additional police as a precaution. However, by the afternoon, 10–15 youths were seen moving in vehicles past the chairman’s house as if on patrol.
On Friday evening in Kakrail, clashes erupted between activists of the Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikhar Parishad.
During the crackdown, Nur was reportedly beaten. He is currently being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Following the clashes, the interim government has announced a departmental investigation. Police have also decided to carry out a separate inquiry into the incident.
