Floods and cyclones caused an estimated Tk 412 billion in damage across Bangladesh between 2021 and 2025, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said.
Responding to a question in the parliament from reserved-seat MP Sabikun Nahar on Thursday, the minister cited data from the Department of Disaster Management.
According to the figures, floods accounted for Tk 292.77 billion in losses during the five-year period, while cyclones caused damage worth Tk 119.23 billion.

The minister said a total of 249 people lost their lives in floods and cyclones between 2021 and 2025.
Of them, 190 died in floods and 59 in cyclones.
He said the two types of disasters affected a combined 17.73 million people during the period.

Floods affected 16.86 million people, while cyclones affected another 874,206, according to the department's data.
Dulu said the government has continued investing in disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure to reduce losses from natural disasters.
Over the past five years, 40 multipurpose cyclone shelters, 337 flood shelters and 115 disaster shelters have been constructed across the country, he said.

To improve access to shelters during emergencies, the government also built 4,681.15km of disaster-resilient HBB roads.
In addition, 6,278 bridges and culverts have been constructed, while another 580 are currently under construction.
The minister said work is continuing to strengthen modern early warning and forecasting systems, the Cyclone Preparedness Programme, risk-informed anticipatory actions, and the capacity of disaster management committees and volunteers.

He also outlined the government's post-disaster assistance initiative, saying affected families are being provided with GR food assistance, cash support, housing construction and repair assistance, corrugated sheets and dry food, along with other humanitarian aid.
"These initiatives have significantly reduced the loss of life and property during disasters, while the country's disaster response capacity has continued to improve," the minister told parliament.
