The Bangladesh Army has said a group with malicious intent is “misrepresenting” its chief’s remarks on legal immunity for troops in civil aid operations on social media.
In a media statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said a presentation of a research report was held on Sept 30 to identify ways to make the Army’s activities in aid of the civil administration more effective and dynamic.
The event reportedly discussed the deployment of soldiers under the country’s existing laws and the challenges involved.
The statement said during the discussion, the issue of immunity granted to soldiers deployed “in aid to civil power” under Section 132 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) came up.
As part of the exchange, the Army chief explained the legal immunity under Section 132 and its possible conflict with the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973 (Amended 2024), it added.
Under the CrPC, troops deployed by government order act according to the law to disperse unlawful gatherings.
The military’s media wing said ensuring legal protection for on-duty military personnel is “essential”, and the matter has already been reported to the relevant authorities.
It clarified that at no point during the discussion did the Army chief mention immunity for enforced disappearances, killings, or other crimes against humanity.
According to ISPR, a particular conspiratorial group, especially some individuals living abroad, are “deliberately distorting” the content of the study period and the Army chief’s remarks on social media with “dishonest and malicious intent”.
Through these misleading posts, they are attempting to “create a rift” between the patriotic Bangladesh Army and the people, it said.
“Such claims are completely baseless and intentional. The public is urged to stay alert against these false and deceptive contents,” the statement read.
It added that the Bangladesh Army has always carried out its duties with professionalism and discipline, remaining committed to the Constitution, the laws of the state, and the people, and will continue to do so.
