Two policemen have been injured after coming under attack by suspected muggers while investigating a robbery report in Narayanganj’s Bandar Upazila. Their shotgun was also snatched, police said.
The attack took place around 2:30am on Friday in the Old Port Chowdhury Bari area, according to Tarek Al Mehedi, additional superintendent of police for crime in Narayanganj.
He said Assistant Sub-Inspector Sohel Rana and Constable Faisal Hossain of Port Police Station were injured in the attack after being struck with sharp weapons.
“The shotgun they were carrying was also taken at the time,” he said.
He added that another team from Port Police Station later raided the area and recovered the weapon from under a tree nearby around 6:15am.
Port Police Station chief Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin said three young men had reported to police on Thursday night that they had been mugged.
Based on the complaint, a patrol team led by ASI Sohel Rana went to the spot for a preliminary inquiry, he said.
“After spotting the police, a group of 10 to 15 suspected muggers attacked the officers with sharp weapons,” he said.
“Constable Faisal and ASI Rana were seriously injured. Another police team was then informed, and they rescued the two officers and took them to the Upazila Health Complex.”
Police later said Constable Faisal was sent to Rajarbagh Police Hospital for advanced treatment.
ASP Tarek said three suspects had been arrested over the incident.
“Several police teams are working to identify the other accused and arrest them,” he said.
No case had been filed over the incident as of 1pm on Friday, he added.
Earlier, on Mar 9, three men stopped a uniformed policeman riding a motorcycle on Bangabandhu Road in front of the city’s Nitaiganj Nagar Bhaban and robbed him of his service pistol after threatening him with sharp weapons.
Police later recovered the weapon and arrested several people in connection with the incident.
Less than a week later, on Mar 15, two railway police personnel were assaulted by alleged drug dealers during an anti-drug drive on the Ukilpara railway line in the city.
