Three women and a teenage passenger have been killed when a truck slammed into an auto-rickshaw on the Mymensingh-Tangail Highway.

The accident took place at around 12:15pm on Monday at Kumargata in Mymensingh’s Muktagachha Upazila, said Muktagachha Police chief Kamrul Hasan.

An 18-year-old Tushar Chandra Das of Mymensingh Sadar Upazila was the last to be confirmed dead after being rush to a local hospital, while two more people were injured in the crash.

Jamalpur residents Farzana Akhter Shiuli, 38, and her daughter Khusnur Jannat Rinti, 11, along with Chowdhury Hosne Ara Begum, a 54-year-old lawyer practising in Mymensingh, died on the spot, said the police officer.

Another female passenger of the auto-rickshaw, identified only as Tamanna, was critically injured.

Police and witnesses said one of the tyres of the Mymensingh town-bound auto-rickshaw coming from Nandina in Jamalpur burst right before a sand-laden truck struck it from behind, killing Farzana, Rinti and Hosne Ara on the spot.

Tushar and Tamanna were recovered and taken to Mymensigh Medical College Hospital, where the teenager was declared dead.

Tamanna was immediately referred to Dhaka for better treatment.

Auto-rickshaw driver Sohel, identified with a single name, was also injured, said Kamrul, adding that they are investigating him.

The process of legal measures is under way.
