The death toll from a head-on collision between a pickup and a truck in Sylhet's South Surma has risen to nine after another injured labourer died.

Fifty-year-old Ramim, identified by a single name, died in the intensive care unit of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital around 10:30pm on Sunday, said Md Manzurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

Ramim was from Bhatipara village in Sunamganj's Derai Upazila and had been living in Loharpora in Sylhet's Ambarkhana.

Several others injured in the crash are still undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The accident occurred around 6am on Sunday near the Telibazar Bridge area in South Surma.

According to Fire Service and Civil Defence, 20 steel-fixing workers were travelling in a pickup from Ambarkhana Point in Sylhet city to Lalabazar in South Surma.

They were also carrying welding equipment.

As the vehicle reached Telibazar Bridge, it collided head-on with a jackfruit-laden truck coming from the opposite direction.

All those riding in the pickup were thrown from the vehicle.

Four people died at the scene.

Another four succumbed to their injuries after being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Ramim died later that night, taking the death toll to nine.
