The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has questioned its former commissioner Md Jahurul Haque for nearly three hours as part of an inquiry into allegations of bribery, abuse of power and forgery.
Jahurul arrived at the ACC headquarters in Segunbagicha around 10:30am on Wednesday, accompanied by his wife.
He left the office after the questioning ended at about 1:30pm, without responding to questions from journalists.
ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam confirmed the interrogation but offered no additional information.
The national anti-graft agency is investigating allegations that Jahurul “abused his authority to receive financial benefits from suspects in cases under investigation, secured a RAJUK plot through forgery, accepted large bribes from two major telecom operators and laundered the money abroad to acquire assets in multiple countries”.
To probe the allegations, the ACC formed a three-member inquiry committee in January last year, headed by Director SMM Akhtar Hamid Bhuiyan. Assistant Director Minhaj Bin Islam and Deputy Assistant Director Md Zakir Hossain are also members of the team.
/on Dec 3, the commission lodged a case against Jahurul and five others over allegations of illegally reducing international incoming call termination rates and revenue sharing, causing an estimated Tk 90 billion loss to the state.
The home ministry has already cancelled Jahurul’s passport and imposed a travel ban on him.
Jahurul, a former district and sessions judge, also served as a trial judge in the BDR killings case. He retired from judicial service in 2014.
During the Awami League government, he was appointed a commissioner at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and later became its chairman.
He held the position of ACC commissioner from Mar 10, 2021, until his resignation on Oct 30, 2024, following the government changeover.
