Former MP and ex-FBCCI chief AK Azad has said the attack on his campaign was a consequence of his opposition to extortion and the illegal extraction of sand from the Padma River.
Speaking to journalists in Faridpur city’s Jhiltuli on Monday, he said that attempts to curb public support through violence would not succeed.
“This attack was carried out because they are jealous of my popularity.”
The attack on Azad's motorcade had occurred earlier, on Sunday afternoon, during his public outreach in Sadar Upazila’s Parmanandapur, allegedly under the banner of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal.
The attackers reportedly vandalised two vehicles during the incident.
Timely police intervention, however, prevented a major confrontation.
Police later said Azad left the area with his motorcade following the scuffle.
The district Jubo Dal, however, denied any involvement in the attack.
The former MP said he is preparing to file a case on the matter at Kotwali Police Station.
